Rice donors share how the Legacy IRA Act benefits them and the university!

Rice donors share how the Legacy IRA Act benefits them and the university!

The Legacy IRA Act, which went into effect January 2023, changes the law on Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to now allow those age 70 ½ or older to make a one-time, $55,000 QCD directly from an IRA in exchange for a charitable gift annuity. This is a new opportunity for traditional IRA owners to give a QCD to a publicly qualified charity such as Rice and receive income benefits in return.

Read the testimonies below to learn why our supporters are using this unique giving opportunity to support their favorite programs at Rice.

"If Rice is part of your long-term giving plans, establishing a charitable gift annuity is the way to go. The rates are the highest they have been in years, so you get to make your contribution to Rice and receive an income stream for life. My wife and I did not attend Rice, but we go to dozens of performances at the Shepherd School each year, and I am happy that we were able to set up a fund to support their fantastic work."

— Gary Winston

"Rice University has given us two wonderful graduates, who went on to become physicians and are practicing doctors in Austin. Most of our savings is in our IRA, and we felt that the money would be best spent supporting future students at Rice. By establishing the Varshney Family Scholarship, we hope it will help the university expand its wonderful education to bright but financially challenged students."

— Dev Varshney

"My son was a student in the late 90s, and Rice did so much to accommodate his needs. When the time came to start taking distributions from my IRA, I knew I wanted to give to Rice's disability services and empower other talented students. My wife taught me that supporting the needs and successes of others provides a sense of satisfaction and connection, and I couldn't agree more. Rice's Office of Gift Planning has been invaluable in helping me to identify great causes and tax-wise giving options."

— Jim Friel
